"Jack Spade initiated a study in honesty. One hundred wallets were purposely lost around New York City. Individuals became subjects of the study by picking up a lost wallet. All subjects were photographed from a distance. Each person that found a wallet had the opportunity to contact the 'owner' through an 'If Found' card located in an interior pocket of the wallet. If contacted, the 'owner' arranged an agreeable time and place whereby the wallet could be returned. The study facilitated the exploration of various questions. For example : is the East Village more honest than the West Village? Will men and women respond differently? Etc. Each wallet has numbered and corresponded to a logbook entry. The log documented the wallet's color and contents, location, lost, and character type. The contents of each wallet were tailored to reflect one of four predetermined character types. The character types were : Traveler, Man About Town, Loser, and Family Man." -- publisher's statement.
